Keelan O’Neill with the JCEC Post Graduate Research Award Plaque

18th July 2016.  Congratulations to Fluid Science Resources PhD student Keelan O’Neill who recently received the overall award at the JCEC Postgraduate Research Excellence Awards.  Keelan’s research is for a multiphase flow meter that uses earth’s field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technology to measure individual component flow rates such as gas, water and oil in pipelines.

The flowmeter is currently in the ’proof of concept’ phase with testing being carried out in a small flow loop at the UWA Engineering Laboratories. The project has the potential to provide a unique, affordable and reliable multiphase flow meter for subsea applications in the oil and gas industry.

Keelan states “It was wonderful to receive the award in recognition of my work when there many other talented research students working on exciting chemical engineering projects within Western Australia”

Jordan Oakley also from the Fluid Science Resources group presented at the awards. He spoke about his research on avoiding solids formation in cryogenic heat exchangers used in LNG production.

Held by the Joint Chemical Engineering Committee in March the third annual Postgraduate Research Excellence Awards showcased the best Chemical Engineering research by Postgraduates in Western Australia. Projects were judged against four criteria being significance of research to chemical engineering, application in industry, novelty and presentation quality.

The JCEC involves the Engineers Australia WA Chemical Branch and the WA ICHEME state branch.
