August 26, 2016. Two of our PhD students took part in the Scitech Science Café held at UWA on Wednesday morning this week. The event gave year 10 and 11 high school students the opportunity to talk in small groups to STEM professionals including scientists, engineers and PhD students about careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Over 280 students and 80 STEM professionals took part in the event which included invited speakers interspersed with networking sessions. The networking sessions provided a great opportunity for students to ask the STEM professionals questions on industry or ‘real world’ relevance of their research or work and career orientated questions such as work-life balance.
PhD students Shane Morrissy and Paul Connolly from the FSR Group took part in the networking sessions and enjoyed speaking with the students about their research and its relevance to the Oil & Gas industry.
The cafe has been held in previous years and was part of 2016 National Science Week celebrations. The event was supported by UWA, the Australian Research Council and our Industry Partner Chevron.
Paul Connolly is a second year PhD student studying carbon capture and storage, specifically, investigating the physical movement of carbon dioxide once it has been injected into porous rock formations. Prior to starting a PhD Paul was employed as a geologist working in both iron ore exploration and mining.
Shane Morrissy is a third year PhD student studying the effect of anti-agglomerants on hydrate formation in the area of Flow Assurance for the Oil & Gas industry.
